We're All in This Together

Hello Everybody, Frank here.

A couple of days back, I actually think it was Saturday, Fern published an article entitled, One More Wake Up Call. The article was basically about what happened in Paris, France. It was a horrible event, a tragedy, and according to the President of France, it was an "act of war". Those words mean something coming from the head of state, it means that his country has been attacked and that his country is going to respond to the attack. I hope he follows up. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the French people.

Back to Fern's article. We both thought it was a good write, but neither one of us thought it was anything spectacular. Thought provoking maybe, but you never know how the readers are going to respond. We have published things that we thought were zingers, with few to no comments. And then the opposite happens, we put out something that's fair, mediocre, okay and it seems to flip a switch with the readers. This was one of those articles.

The comments that we received had a depth and insight that caught us off guard. There were responses from 'Down Under' from readers with family in Europe. The entire group was focused, articulate and well spoken. A lot of folks don't read the comments, but this is one time I'm going to ask you to read these comments. These are people just like you and I that have opinions. I think you will be surprised at some of the thought that was put into these replies. There seems to be a general thread, and I for one was proud and honored to read them. I hope you find some satisfaction in reading them also.

I would like to thank all of the fine folks that took the time to comment and share their feelings and perspective. It has given us a great deal to ponder.

God Bless.

We'll talk more later,

Frank

Hi Fern,

It is terrible news from Europe and especially the country of France about the muslim bombings and shootings . You hit the nail on the head with the very trying question, where next? The muslim invasion of Europe is a foretelling of what we in the U.S. may be in for in the very near future, especially if the government starts to import " refugees", and I use that term very loosely. It should come as no surprise to the U.S. when similar events occur on our soil, remember , we are considered the great satan by the muslims. When atrocities are done in the name of allah and the muslim community makes no effort to show any sorrow, any grief or any signs of condolence I become very distrustful of them to say the least . Their silence speaks volumes to me.

I believe it will soon be a very intense time of difficult questions, difficult answers and and some very difficult decisions for Americans. Yesterday was the best time for us to have the discussions, before things started to get a little dicey. Right now is the next best time to have those discussions, do it now. What will you and your family do when events seem out of control? Can you feed, clothe, protect and provide for your family? Can you afford to provide charity to the young and the elderly?

Martial law is our biggest concern, I can't fight the government, state, or local police, nor do I want to even consider that option. I love what this country once was, but I know that it will never be the same in my lifetime.

I suggest going to the Lord in prayer for guidance, comfort and direction in all things, big or small.

Bluesman

Hello, Bluesman. Your thoughts are well put, well placed and I concur. Our government is shipping in immigrants from Syria, Somalia and other peace loving nations. I don't question any more our governments motives. I don't see this thing turning out well, people have been blinded and most of those that can see stick their head in the sand. I really appreciate your comment. Thank you.

For some time I have been watching with interest the escalation of racial hatred in our country. And then Paris was attacked. It didn't take me long to figure out that we have threats coming on at least two fronts. Our leaders in government have done everything they could think of to promote hate and discontent between the races. And they roll out the red carpet to "refugees," including those whose only goal is the elimination of all who do not believe in their god.

We are living in a runaway freight train world. The bridge about a mile down the line is out. A wreck is inevitable. If we don't do everything we can to get ready, we will go down in flames.

As far as sharing what I have stored for my family, I don't think so. I will not sacrifice one of my own to appease those who are busy playing while I am working to keep my family alive.

There are no safe zones. Politically correct microaggressions are a crock of crap. If a person needs a trigger warning so they don't have to deal with anything bad, I have a news flash for them. Nobody is going to give them a warning when something bad is headed their way. Just ask those poor people at the theater in Paris.

Vicki, your comments are well taken. In our house you could not have said it any better. I don't think it can be stopped. We're going to have to deal with the consequences that have been put in motion, and we may not weather well at all. I hate saying things like that, but it appears that the writing is on the wall. We are weak as a society and our leaders are traitors. We have been sold out. It's not that they can't see. They can. I wish I knew why, but I will probably never be privileged with that information. We all need to do the best we can. Thank you again.

Fern, I have been fighting for Constitutional government for 40 years. Our Founders' Republic has been squandered. Just 25 years ago the world could look to Reagan’s ‘shining city on a hill’. Its lights are now dark. America is bleeding out. Something will replace it. Pray for that.

Getting a grasp of all the battlefronts was overwhelming; a deceitful tyrannical government, treasonous leaders yielding sovereignty to powerful globalists, a media controlled by wolves, an emerging Nazi Police State, Socialists tearing down God’s natural laws to promote deviant behaviors, gun-grabbers intent on disarming Americans, Nazi indoctrination centers posing as ‘schools’, murderers of 3,000 unborn babies every day, warmongering Neocons murdering and harming millions of innocent people in their continuous wars.

Christ distilled them into one word, ‘wolves’. And Christ warned us about ‘hirelings’ who are supposed to be shepherds protecting us from the wolves. They should be willing to lie down their lives to protect us. But hirelings flee when the wolves attack the sheep. (John 8:11-12) Sadly, America’s House of God fell first. It fell to hirelings.

There is hope for the future. But for right now follow Fern's advice. Take action to protect your loved ones. Parents, that’s YOU! NOW! And give your children the greatest gift, Jesus Christ.
The list of current events you gave us are accurate and heartbreaking. This is where we are and it is unbelievable most days. Thank you for giving us even more to think about. Blessings to you and yours. Be ready.

Tewshooz

Islam is the enemy....always has been. Total odds with Christianity. The president is a Muslim and what our enemies cannot do from without, he is doing from within. Divide and conquer and the stupid liberals in this country are too busy being offended and huddling in their safe zones to notice. Even the so called Christian churches are in on the resettling the Muslims here, They are the current temple money changers and Judases, selling us down the river. But, take heart....this has all been foretold and those of us who are awake will know the face of Satan and look away towards our God.

How can people be so blind, Tewshooz? I know what has been foretold, but why is it so easy for so many people to swallow everything hook, line and sinker? And then turn on those that don't? It's an amazing world we live in and one I don't like looking at very closely sometimes. It seems to just ooze evil out every pore. Thank you for your comment.

harry flashman at 'self sufficient mountain living' reports that moslems stop traffic in atlanta by 'praying' in the middle of the streets! arrogance and laughing up their sleeves at those whom they inconvenience.also read that there were celebrations in moslem areas of paris when news of the attack came through. that might not be true, don't know.

Rumors always abound, Deborah, who knows.

I've thought about your post today, wanting and needing to reply. My heart hurts for the people of Paris, for the families that lost loved ones. I believe that soon it will come to OUR country, maybe to your town.

Are you prepared? What are you waiting for? Maybe you need to dust off the box that your canner or dehydrator came in, and learn how to use it before it's too late. I pray that you're ready.

Grace

Hi, Grace. I don't believe it's coming to our country, I believe it's here. We're not immune to what happened in Paris, it won't be long. What are people waiting for? They're waiting for the government to take care of them. Thank you for your ideas.

Hi,
I am from direct German ancestry, I live in NZ , here its a very peaceful country, what sickens me and has me very very hopping mad, is the MSM even here talk about the terrorists ! no one in the MSM mentions the " I " and " M" words ! no one else dares breathe the jihad word !, the PC correct brigade of loony lefties and elite university professors never talk about the violent 103 verses in the koran or the verses in the Hadiths or the Sura that call for the killing of the Jew and Christian, the culpable and traitorous leaders we have in the West are opening the doors even wider two days later, down here they talk about how the ideas promoted by the right are the cause of the problem and how here in NZ we need to let in many thousands more of Islamic refugee's and must tolerate them because its racist otherwise!

Hello. Thank you for sharing a different perspective. Look at what's happening in Sweden, they have an open door policy. I guess if the system is not abused, for whatever the reason, then it is a good thing to help those in need. But letting a destructive foreign army into your house or your country is suicide. That's what we're doing. We are inviting our enemy into our houses. How stupid are we? No kidding. How disillusioned and blind have we become to not see the enemy looking into our eyes, taking what we have and reconstructing the hell holes where they have come from? We have done this to ourselves, just look at what's happening in Sweden.

Merkel is a traitor, I don't know what her real motivation is, but its all not good, my Auntie's in Germany have been told that they must make a room available for a economic refugee , they will be paid 15,000 Euro as a once only payment, if they refuse making a room available then the fine is 50,00 Euro and legal action from the town Burgameister (Mayor) , note this is legally enforceable in Saxony and lower Silesia, the German people themselves have done this by allowing the stigma of being called a nazi tag to stick. Anyone speaks up they are labelled a " Nazi " and then immediately shut up.

My prediction is civil war in Germany, it is too late to stop this, firearms ARE available in Germany and many in the country have arms hidden from the end of the war, so many people in Germany are angry and scared, the country cannot cope with millions of Moslem men who are angry with ideas of Jihad , so please if you read this, please pray for the Germans who also prepare and see the storm ahead, many of us will also suffer, I think many Germans will also die when the storm of Islam rises, so America will also suffer our fate, I am fortunate to not be in Germany, but all my relatives are, it will not matter which western country you are in soon, we can but prepare accordingly.
Regards
Wolfgang

Remember back to your 2010 Census form when the Guvmint asked about your house? How many people, how many bedrooms etc. Do you actually think they didn't ask for this exact situation? How long will it be before the Guvmint will tell you to make room, under the threat of the gun, for some Islamic family in your spare rooms?

Carl in the UP

Thank you, Wolfgang. I am sorry for those countries, as I am sorry for the USA. I was once told that kindness can be seen as weakness. Due to past failed societies, we have burdened ourselves with weakness. There are multiple examples, but I can't mention them because it's a hate crime. This is where we are, we are all going to suffer and I don't know what the outcome is going to be. This is the way it is. Today it is raining at my house. This is the way it is. Thank you for your comments.

Frank

Hi, Carl. I sure hope you're wrong, but hope is a very poor strategy, isn't it? But I still HOPE you're wrong.

Calidore

While watching the horrific scenes in Paris on TV my children (20 and 16) commented that they are glad we live in the country as it won't happen here. It broke my heart but their father and I had to inform them that it could happen anywhere. Yes we live in Australia and yes we live in the country but that doesn't mean we are totally safe. All we can do is prepare as best we can, hope and pray. DH and our worker where discussing later just what an attack on a country town would mean. It was very simple - it would be a statement that NO ONE IS SAFE. We are at WAR of that I'm totally convinced and my Mum made the comment that every generation experiences war (she is in her 70's) but each time war is different with different rules and aggressors. This mass exodus of refugees is for a reason and it terrifies me to think of what that reason is.

My prayers are with you all no matter where you live.

Calidore, thank you for your prayers. I believe you are right, we are at WAR. But our western ways show us that we're slow learners. We as a country and government still think that the might of an aircraft carrier will intimidate and defeat our enemies. How foolish! War is not fought with who has the biggest stick, but we just can't seem to get rid of that illusion. We can bomb all day long and it will not stop what is happening or what is coming.

I'm not sure where to go with this, but we have got to change the way we see things. We have got to fight on their level, but to do so we're going to have to change our compassionate, sympathetic, open door ideology. We have cornered ourselves with some of our civil rights laws. It appears that everybody has a right to do whatever, except the majority. Our foundation has been eroded, we are under attack and it's against our laws to even discuss what is necessary to do to fight this enemy.

Our soldiers are gallant, our leadership are cowards.

Prepare. Thank you.

Frank

Susan Nielsen

It seems that most of the "refugees" shown coming off the boats and marching into towns are mostly young men. Where are the women, children and elderly? Did these young men abandon their families in war zones to death? Shouldn't they be trying to defend their country?

Good points, Susan. They are defending their country against the Great Satan because that's why they're here. When we send our warriors off to fight, we don't send their families with them either. And when they send their warriors off to fight, they're not sending their families with them either. So it's obvious these are not refugees, this is an army. We are under attack. We are housing and feeding this army so they can bite the hand that feeds them. That's why you don't see the women and children, because they are back home praying for their soldiers, just like we pray for ours. Thank you for your observation.

A Collage of Comments

Hello Everybody, Frank here.

We've received some interesting comments lately, and we've posted some interesting responses. I've never done this before, but it seemed like the right thing to to. Not everybody reads all of the comments. When I'm reading other folks blogs, I think the comments in many cases are the most interesting part. I know other bloggers that never read comments. I found these particularly interesting and I wanted to share them with you.

At the same time, I would also like to encourage you and invite you to share your thoughts. You see we're all in this one big stadium together, whether we're in Florida, Washington, Maine or Oklahoma. When this thing comes down, it's going to come down on all of us. Some people have some very interesting things to say.

So here are some comments that were a response to What Do You Think?  Enjoy the read.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Everything is upside down and backwards. Some can be charged with a crime for voicing an opinion while others can march in the streets calling for the killing of cops and nothing happens to them. Upholding the Constitution seems to have become optional. I have to wonder how long it will be before bloggers who speak their truth are silenced. That still, small voice has turned into a very loud scream of warning. Vicki
***********************************************************************************
Thank you, Vicki. I don't think things are upside down and confused, I think everything that is happening is by design and has a purpose. The more confusion you have, it's actually easier to control the masses. You see, we
have multiple conflicts coming soon. It's not going to be like the Civil War of the 1860's. This war is going to be vastly different, and it's already started. You need to get your head wrapped around this. It's already started and it's going to continue to escalate. Our government is going to continue to do things that rational folks will believe are crazy and insane. But we have to change the way we think, because it is not crazy and insane from the government's perspective, from their perspective to achieve their goal, it is logical and practical. Opposing thoughts are often difficult to see and interpret. Think like your opponent. The war has already started. The lines are still being drawn, and we the Sheep are going to get trampled, because we have become lazy and fat with our greed and selfishness. We are in serious trouble. Things aren't what they appear to be. Get your head right.
Frank
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We all know what is happening and why. Satan walks the earth unchecked as foretold. Years ago I often wondered how it would all unfold and now I know..... I could have never imagined it back then. Tewshooz

***********************************************************************************

Well, Tewshooz, it's here. We have let evil into our everyday lives, we have welcomed it. We elect evil politicians, we are the problem, we have allowed this to happen. We, as a whole, are sick, deranged and demented. That is what we elect, that is what we choose to watch on television, and that's who we choose to associate with. As stated earlier, we are in serious trouble. So, do we give up and join them? Or do we choose to take a stand? They are significantly more formidable, and we are weak.

I believe this is not the time of the great coming, things are going to get sharply worse before that occurs. We aren't even close to that event coming. I know, because we've been told. That time is not near, so now we have to deal with what is near. Get ready.

i am very curious about the silence of congress.
of course, the loudmouth nuts are the ones you hear about but what of the many others? are they blackmailed into silence?

each generation falls into the same traps. if the devil ever laughs he must be amused by human gullibility. it is said that God has no grandchildren. that is because each one must learn the lessons of our ancestors anew in every generation. there is no collective , cumulative wisdom. it is all new all the time.

we know the end will come and we know that He said there would have been nothing left alive if He didn't intervene when He did.
it will be misery undreamed of. shudder!!!

but no man knows the time. in my life i have seen Europe try to coalesce into one country several times. each time it came apart. the time is not yet ripe. 'when with the ever circling years shall come the time foretold.'

these are but the beginning of sorrows and the tip of the iceberg.
it is like watching a wreck and being unable to intervene.

pray more! i pray for safety for my child. what else can we do? it is in God's hands.

Deborah

***********************************************************************************

Deborah, everything is in God's hands. But God has given us talents, and He expects us to use them. If we do, then we are rewarded, if we don't, we aren't. You're right, the time is not here, and it may be many, many years before it is.

As far as Congress goes, they are a sad LOT. We used to have separation of government, we don't anymore. The courts determine laws which used to be the job of Congress. The executive branch overrides the judicial and legislative branches, and nobody does anything. I wish I knew the true reason why these former men of honor have been silenced. I would like to know the answer to that, but that is not within my pay grade.

It is time to knuckle down. This is not going to be a picnic, and there are not going to be any commercials. This will be constant, endless, continuous bombardment. It's here. Best of luck.

Frank

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fern - once again you have made me sit back and think about and reconsider my life plan. What is going on in the world, especially Europe with the refugees which will no doubt spill over to the US, the far East and South America with weather events and here in the US with weather, politics and news, or lack thereof, should be having much more of an impact on how we live our lives. My neighbors and acquaintances, most in their late 60s to mid 70s, seem to live in a cocooned insular world. They are choosing to ignore what is happening. Those I know in their 30s-50s are still living a me-first existence and those over 80, unbelievably, seem to think their end is near so who cares.
Once again, as snowbird season arrives, we are cleaning out what we don't need or what will not enhance our lives. Snowbirds buy, seems to be one of their major activities. With that money we are adding food supplies, gardening supplies being sure to take advantage of end of season seed sales as our season is just beginning, food plants to our landscape, well made natural fiber clothes from the consignment/thrift store - anything to make our lives easier to care for, more streamlined and easier to maintain when the economy goes. We just sold a truck accessory, we no longer have the truck, and bought a 'worm farm' and red wigglers to add some much needed soil amendments to our wonderful sand that is called dirt - also uses the kitchen waste as we can't have a compost pile due to HOA regs.
So, I will take a look at your referred articles, pay attention to local news, keep an eye on the weather and how it will affect food supplies, continue to streamline my life and plan for how I will weather the storm of the upcoming disaster and I'm sure there will be a disaster whether man-made or natural or a combination of both. Bellen
***********************************************************************************
Hi, Bellen, astute observations. Your comment about the snowbirds having a tendency to buy, I wonder if they would be buying different things if they could see past their perceived ideals of a slick buy.
I meet few people, very few, that are earnestly preparing for what is obviously here. Most are more concerned about the sporting event on TV, or the newest commercials. They're just blind. This is the way, and the process, of long-term conditioning. These folks aren't going to be hard to control, manipulate or defeat. These are the folks the camps are made for.
God, I hope we never experience Soylent Green. I really hope this does not occur. If they will harvest baby parts and murder the babies, why would they waste a protein rich human body? Dreadful thought, isn't it? Aborting babies to harvest their organs and sell their tissue, this is where we are, and these are the type of minds that control our government. Sick thought, sick government. These people will do anything. Soylent Green is what's for dinner.
Frank
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There are lots of us that see what is coming, but we are still the vast minority, and we don't all agree on how it's going to come. We're told that we are supposed to help our brothers. This is what Fern and I do. The many people that comment, this is what they do, too. These people are not sick, mislead, or to use a common term, crazy. We're solid, productive, caring, loving individuals. We're doing what we have been told to do.

Time is dwindling. Whatever this thing is, it is upon us. It has consumed the vast majority of us, and one day, when the perfect storm is just right, it will lash out, taking many immediately with it. Ol' Remus used to say, "Avoid crowds at all costs." Folks, now is not the time to be burning bridges, figuratively speaking of course. Now is the time to be mending bridges. Get right with your neighbors, your relatives and God.

This thing coming is going to be a real rough ride. Just because some of us know what is coming, doesn't mean we're going to survive the war. Please heed the warnings.

We'll talk more later, Frank

We Are Two! Be Vigilant!

Guess what? We're two! We began our blog on May 30, 2013 with much trepidation and doubt that it was an intelligent move on our part. Doubtful that anyone would find it useful, interesting or even read it, and trepidation at putting our thoughts out there in internet land. But we felt compelled to share what we know, what we have experienced, and our knowledge of the need to prepare for the demise of our country and society. Unfortunately, the call to prepare still needs to be sounded for as many as will listen, so we continue to share our lives, our thoughts and our preparations.

Frank's first radio communications post was about rules and safety. From there he moved on to CB radios and regular family handheld, or GMRS and FRS radios. He has taught folks how to get their ham radio license, what equipment they need to meet certain communication goals, and how important radio communications will be to all of us when no other means of contact is available. We want to thank everyone that has asked questions and shared with us their success at obtaining a ham radio license. It is always great to hear that something we wrote helped them along the way.

Fern has shared goats, gardening and cheese making. Canning, cooking and insects. Even though she has shared many things in these categories, she has learned a great deal from the comments you have left. We enjoy the 'conversations' we are able to have with you through the comment section. The article is not finished or complete until we have had the opportunity to learn more, or be given food for thought, by you the reader. You see, even though we share many things here in hopes that it will be useful to someone, we have also learned a great deal from all you have shared with us. For that, we are truly grateful.

We have had the honor to be featured on several prominent blogs in the homestead/preparedness/survival areas. We would like to thank Patrice Lewis of Rural Revolution for tutoring us when we first began this blog. She took the time to answer many questions and give us pointers.

We would also like to thank James, Wesley Rawles of SurvivalBlog for featuring several of our articles on his blog. These folks have helped increase our readership and allowed us to share with many more people than we would have ever reached on our own. Every time you comment, you give us more to think about, research, and learn. We truly appreciate all that you teach us.

Besides radios, chickens, cheese and bugs, we all need to be astutely aware that our government is playing some serious games. Most of us are aware that the economy, not just of the United States, but of the entire planet, is in serious, serious disarray. We've all seen bugs and birds, fish and mammals do everything they can to survive. Our government is no different. It will do what is necessary to keep itself with it's head above water at any cost. Just take a look at quantitative easing. It doesn't work and hasn't worked.

Now is not the time to become complacent. Look at Baltimore, or Chicago. If we look very closely it would appear that our government is stirring the pot and turning up the heat. I know these are sad things to say, but if we look closely, it appears that the lines are being set for some type of civil insurrection. Just watch a cattleman herd his cattle. If he wants them to go a certain way, he doesn't have to use lots of force, he just very gently coerces the animals in the direction he desires. This is what is happening in America. We're all being led like the cattle, ultimately to the feed lot and slaughter house. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

Summertime is coming. Lots of daylight and lots of heat. October is the traditional month for stock market problems, and some of our financial bubbles cannot continue to survive. You need to keep an eye on Greece, because if they go down the drain, that will be the end of the European Union. You need to pay attention to congress, also. This is unquestionably the highest concentration of corrupt, white collar criminals ever organized. They, like the government, will do anything to keep their heads above water. We do not have a representative type of government any longer. Are there exceptions to the rule? Of course, but they are few and far between. So, if our government will do anything to keep it's head above water, and congress will do anything to keep it's head above water, I don't think that you and I, the common people, are really on anybody's agenda. We are just slaves.

There are a few other topics to pay attention to. We have a serious immigration problem. Our borders are being flooded with unskilled criminals, not just from Mexico, but from other countries with which we have serious enemies. The Department of Human Services, or whatever your state calls it, has created a huge population that refuses to work, and our government has conveniently created a majority welfare subculture. The educational system, as I stated before, is a pathetic, cesspool pretending to be educating our children, while the children are actually being indoctrinated. Are there exceptions to this rule? Sure there are.

Now is not the time to drop your vigilance. A lot of prominent individuals are predicting a serious disruption this fall, and some are saying earlier. Please pay attention and get prepared. If I am wrong, Hallelujah! If I am right, may God be with us all.

Update on Canning Okra - DO NOT USE THIS RECIPE

I have received several comments/questions about the Canning Okra post I did. Some of the comments expressed concern about how well the canned okra would keep since I did not put it through the water bath. I will include the comments below and then report the information I found out.

Since this is not put through a water bath, do you have any idea how long these will be good? Does the vinegar act as a type of pickling agent? Even so, pickles are put through a water bath, unless you go the lactose fermentation route. I love fried okra, so this would be a good way to have okra on hand, but I am worried about how long it would last.

This is the first year I have tried this so I don't know how long it will keep. I have made relish and pickles that I don't water bath and they are good for a year or more. The ratio of vinegar to water in the okra recipe is much less than standard pickles or relish, though. I will ask the lady I got the recipe from and see if she knows how long they will keep.
Do any of you canners out there have any input?
Thanks for the question. It is a good one.
Fern

I too am a little worried about no processing. I process pickled okra and it has more vinegar and salt. May slide over and ask Patrice :)

I'm curious to know if you heard back from the lady you got the recipe from. I have a freezer is quickly filling with garden veggies and would love to can some this way. I have heard of doing jelly using this method but not okra. I'm going to give it a try though! My little family loves okra and I would love to save some freezer space! Enjoying your blog posts! And we are also Oklahomans - Westville. What a wonderful summer we have had for gardening here!! Abundantly blessed!

I asked the Canned Quilter over at Hickory Holler what she thought about the recipe and here is my question and her response:

Hello CQ,
I have gotten some questions about the recipe for Canned Okra I have on my blog and I was wondering if you could give me an opinion. There are a few people that are concerned about how long the okra will keep without running it through a hot water bath. Would you have any concerns with the following recipe?
Canning Okra
1 gallon sliced okra
2 tbsp. salt
6 tbsp. vinegar
1 cup water
Prepare jars, lids and rings. Place okra in a large pan. Mix vinegar, salt and water together. Pour over okra. Fill pan with enough water to cover okra. Bring to a full boil. Boil for 5 minutes.
Fill jars with okra. Pour enough liquid in jars to cover okra. Seal. No hot water bath. Just have everything hot and the liquid boiling. Put the rings on tight, cover with a towel and let them cool slowly and seal.
Thank you for your time. Fern

I saw this on your blog the other day. Salt and vinegar can both act as preservatives but the amounts seem really low for that purpose. The vinegar and salt are probably to cut the slime of the cut okra. However I would be really unlikely to use this recipe without hot water bathing it. I have pickled okra and canned okra in tomatoes but both were hot water bathed.I prefer to freeze my okra either plain or breaded and it dehydrates really well also. I know that some people are looking for alternatives to freezing and in that instance try dehydrating and I think you would have a better outcome and maybe safer.
Hope this helps,

I also asked Patrice Lewis over at Rural Revolution her opinion. Here is my question and what she said:

Hi Patrice,
I did a post about canning okra for frying that did not include using the water bath. Some of my readers had concerns about how long it would keep. One of them recommended asking your opinion. I will be doing an update to the post reporting the opinions of people I have asked for input. Would you like to provide some information?
Here is the recipe:

I've never cooked with (or even eaten) okra, but I consulted my canning bible ("Putting Food By") and they recommend that okra ONLY be pressure-canned (not water-bath canned, and especially not "nothing" canned).  While there's vinegar in your recipe, it's not enough to pickle the okra.  Okra is low-acid and to preserve it safely, it must be hot-packed and pressure-canned, 25 minutes for pints and 40 minutes for quarts, at 10 lbs (adjusted for altitude).
Remember, just because a jar seals doesn't mean the food is safely processed inside.  It just means the jar sealed.  Nothing replaces heat when it comes to preservation.
Hope this helps!
Patrice

The lady I got the recipe from has not talked to her niece, who has used this recipe the most so I don't have an updated recommendation from them. But due to the new information I have received, I NO LONGER RECOMMEND THIS RECIPE AS IS.

I plan to try canning some okra and see if it still fries up okay or if the canning process makes it too mushy to fry. I will let you know how it turns out. I do not want to share any recipes that will result in unsafe food.

Thank you all for chiming in and sharing your views. It helps all of us learn better ways to preserve our food in a safe and tasty manner.

Until next time - Fern
